Executive Staff Bios

Joe Louis Barrow, Jr., Chief Executive Officer

As chief executive officer, Mr. Barrow provides strategic direction and executive oversight for all activities of The First Tee. He joined The First Tee in 2000 and has led the organization to introduce the game of golf and its values to young people across all 50 states and select international locations. Under Mr. Barrow’s leadership, The First Tee’s network of chapters has grown substantially; the National School Program evolved from a pilot project to full implementation in thousands of elementary schools; and through a partnership with the Department of Defense, The First Tee programs have been made available to children of U.S. servicemen and women.

Mr. Barrow guides The First Tee in developing strategic partnerships that foster the organization’s progress in becoming a force for good in today’s society. He is an America’s Promise Alliance Trustee, and as such is leading The First Tee’s participation in the Alliance’s effort to improve the nation’s high school graduation rate to 90% by 2020.

Mr. Barrow received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Denver.

In 2010, Mr. Barrow was awarded the Gold Tee, Metropolitan Golf Writers Association’s highest award for outstanding leadership and achievements. In 2011, he was inducted into the National Black Golf Hall of Fame, joining his father, Joe Louis, on the 25th anniversary of the same recognition.

Kelly Martin, Chief Operating Officer

As chief operating officer, Ms. Martin oversees the day-to-day management and operations of The First Tee network. She joined The First Tee in 1998 and now leads the team on strategic development of new and enhanced curriculum for chapters, schools and outreach programs. She also oversees the areas of coach training and delivery, outreach, adult education and national participant opportunities. Her role includes targeting areas of growth and advancement for The First Tee’s mission.

Ms. Martin is a graduate of Princeton University and the University of Virginia School of Law.

Jennifer Weiler, Senior Vice President & Chief Development Officer

As chief development officer, Weiler oversees The First Tee’s Philanthropy and Resource Development business units.  She also leads The First Tee’s partnership with the Department of Defense and other strategic relationships.  Weiler joined The First Tee in June 2001 as the Director of the Northeast Region.

Prior to joining The First Tee, Weiler worked in Development and Alumni Relations at the University of Pennsylvania.  During her eight years with Penn, she had various responsibilities including fundraising, project management and event management.

Weiler graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor’s degree in 1992 and Master’s degree in 1995.
